Chapter 10
JOAN
I can’t believe I’m spilling my guts to Surlok. I haven’t told anyone this stuff, and yet this man has the power to make me feel so at ease that I’m telling him my most closely guarded secrets.
It’s enough to make me wonder if he has physic abilities, to match his immense strength, but I know that’s not true. The real answer is that I trust him. When I’m his arms like this, I just feel… safe. And protected.
And a small part of me, as strange as this may sound, resents him for it.
I’m Joan. Of Joan’s Blades. A name that strikes fear into the heart of men. I’m my own woman; I don’t need any man to take care of me. And yet, that is exactly what Surlok is doing. Plus, he’s a hell of a lot stronger than me. Faster, too.
I have to face the facts: When it comes to protecting people, this alien warrior is just plain better than me. And that’s something I’m struggling to accept.
“Tell me about your mother,” he says, his voice low, friendly, and soothing.
I close my eyes and rest my head upon his chest. No one can see us as we race through the woods, so I can finally admit it to myself: I like the way he carries me. I like how he smells. I like the feel of his warm skin. I like how my body wraps so perfectly around his.
I like everything about this man.
“She was the kindest, sweetest woman I’ve ever known,” I say. “She’d read me a bedtime story every night. God, I haven’t thought about any of those stories in years. They were always about princesses, who’d be rescued by a handsome prince. I used to believe her, and then she was taken from us so brutally, and I decided that it was all lies, and I tried my hardest to forget every single fairytale she ever told me. Dumb, right? Now, I want nothing more than to remember her voice, and recall those stories… though looking at you makes me feel like I’m in one.”
A small smirk adorns Surlok’s face, but it turns to a frown when we reach the face of a cliff. “The humans have travelled around this rock,” he says, “but a storm is coming. We must pass over it.”
“What do you—ohmygod!”
I have to hold on tightly as Surlok grabs the rock with his bare hands and starts climbing, moving across the cliff’s face with the same ease as walking up a flight of stairs. My legs are wrapped tightly around his waist, my arms locked around his neck as I hold on for dear life.
Below me the trees get smaller and smaller as Surlok ascends. I pull my gaze away and instead focus on his eyes. He’s looking up, sheer determination on his face as he climbs, and climbs, and climbs.
“You’re insane,” I mutter.
“This is the short route,” he says with a chuckle.
A gust of wind makes me tremble, and I close my eyes.
